The Hungarian Sea: Lake Balaton
It is the largest lake in Central Europe, and one of the region's foremost tourist destinations
Lake Balaton is a freshwater lake in the Transdanubian region of Hungary.
The mountainous region of the northern shore is known both for its historic character and as a major wine region, while the flat southern shore is known for its resort towns. Balatonfüred and Hévíz developed early as resorts for the wealthy, but it was not until the late 19th century when landowners, ruined by Phylloxera attacking their grape vines, began building summer homes to rent out to the burgeoning middle classes.
Local people call Lake Balaton, central Europe's largest fresh water lake, the Hungarian sea. The lake became Hungarians' number one vacation resort after the Trianon Treaty following World War I when large areas of Hungary including some seashore along the Adriatic Sea were taken away.
Balaton is also frequented during the winter, when visitors go ice-fishing or even skate, sledge, or ice-sail on the lake if it freezes over.

You can find excellent resort and spas around the lake but there specially one the world famous with the hot water lake: Hévíz. The steam hovering above the water surface and the surrounding woods prevent water temperature from going go below 24-26 C in winter. People suffering from chronic gynaecological, rheumatic, and some dermatological diseases can find healing in the waters.
Other option could be the nearby Zalakaros is also reputed by its healing thermal waters.

Newer and newer settlers/conquerors brought by the tempests of history, fortunately, carried on the traditions of growing vine realising the unique opportunities provided by the terrain. In the 19th century Badacsony boasted with the best vermouth of its time and the region has a varietal that is not grown elsewhere: Kéknyelû.
As for the RED WINES, this region is more adapted to produce Burgundy type fruity red wines with rich aroma. Red grape varieties grown here are: Gamay, Pinor Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
This is the smallest wine region of Hungary and the only region where grapes are grown on the north side of the mountain. The most famous wines of the region are the Furmint of Somló and the Juhfark or Sheep's Tail of Somló. It is said that all those, who have tasted a wine from Somló will always recognise it forever after.
