The mysterious and beautiful forest: Bakony
Bakony is a mountainous region in Transdanubia, Hungary. It forms the largest part of the Transdanubian Mountains. It is located north of Lake Balaton and lies almost entirely in Veszprém county. The Bakony is divided into the Northern and Southern Bakony through the Várpalota-Veszprém-Ajka-Devecser line. (706 m) high Kőris-hegy in the Northern Bakony is the highest peak of the range. Other high mountains are Som-hegy (649 m),Középső-Hajag (646 m), Öreg-Futóné (576 m) in the Northern Bakony, and Kab-hegy (599 m), Üsti-hegy (536 m) and Agár-tető (511 m) in Southern Bakony. Zirc is often called the Capital of the Bakony because it is located in the center of the Northern Bakony. The Bakony Museumis located there and introduces visitors to the animals, plants and minerals of the Bakony.
70% of the forests of the area are hornbeam-beech groves, mixed with ash, maple, little- and large-leaf linden and cherry. The highest parts of the beech forests, 500 m above sea level, are alpine like, mixed with mountain elm, maple and ash. The most beautiful of there are found on the Kőris, Kék and Parajos Hills. The white rump woodpecker is a characteristic rare bird of these forests. This is the only place in Hungary where it nests. The very rare black stork, the raven, the number of which is increasing, and the endangered lanner also nest here.
We find ravine forests with lunaria, Phyllitis scolopendrium and Anthriscus nitida in the deep valleys (Bécsi, Fehérkő, and Szarvad Canyons) and forests of ash and linden on the rocky sides of the mountains. Groves of alder follow the valleys of the creeks (Gerence, Somberek-Séd). On the northem sides of the ridges, freely exposed to the elements, we find the most interesting forest association of the Bakony Mountains: the mixed karst forest of ash, beech and various sorbtrees. The Hungarian brome-grass grows in an area of some square meters in the Cotinus coggygria and downy oak forest of the Odvaskőhát. This is the only place in Hungary where it is found.
There is a million different type, difficulty hiking trails in the Bakony. You can find them easily just have to check online or just get into the forest and let’s follow the marks. In the forest runs the Cuha-creek what is beautifully clear. The Bakony is a perfect destination for the whole family to have a nice walk.
